Passion
Holla!
It's been quite forever again since I last posted. Partly due to medschool, and partly laziness (yes, I admit). My schedule's pretty loose now, which means I have more free time. Should've blogged a little more, but lately my attention is fixed on cher, my guitar. I have abandoned her for such a long time, and that made me feel guilty. This post, then is dedicated to her, and my long-lost-but-now-found-again passion.
My mom bought me my first guitar when I was in 5th grade. It was a classical guitar, his name was chappy (ignore the his/her naming on my guitar, I just made it up haha). My mom told me to learn classic guitar, and I did, for a month. But I didn't like it, and then I stopped. Chappy was then left, at the corner of my room, dusted, and lonely.
In my junior high years, I learned to play the piano. It was for over 2 years, but then again, I didn't continue on playing. It was a waste, I think, that now I wanted to be able to play the piano so bad haha. But that was it for piano. My musical journey was pretty tragic those days. And then when I was in 11th grade, I saw my chemistry teacher play Jikustik's "Saat Kau Tak Disini" and I was mesmerized. That moment was my turning point, into learning chords and progressions. Youtube was my teacher haha, and it's still very useful until now. I learned more and more songs, progressing from seeing chords in google to finding them by myself. I also started joining the music ministry in church, and it really helped me a lot in my learning process. Thanks to all the demigod guitarists who are patient enough to teach me many many tricks in playing.
A year after I started playing in church, I bought my first electric guitar, her name was lavie. It was derived from the French word, la vie, which means "life." I bought her with my own money, after saving up for months haha. I have always been a rock chick inside, and I grew up listening to many many rock bands. So having my own electric guitar and jamming to it puts me on cloud nine haha. I was also in a band called "Inersia" when I was in high school. It's a girl band, as in, every band player is a girl (not a korean type girlband, please). It was such a great moment for me. There, I met one of my favorite vocalists, Helena. It is when I met her, that I started writing my own songs.
Shortly, high school was over, and I entered medschool. In the early years, I was still very passionate with music. Playing along with my guitars, and jamming a lot with my bandmates. I was also given cher, my acoustic guitar, as my 18th birthday gift from my housemates. It is the most thoughtful gift ever, I really loved it. But then, being in medschool really made you think of priorities. Other days you feel like playing, but you realized that materials are piling up for you to read as well. That cycle goes on and on until I grew tired of it. At one point, I decided to leave my guitar, and just focus on studying. I had maybe like, 6 months or so, of absence. It was also partly because I feel like I had no progress in learning, it was just so so. I still couldn't do this and that and blablabla with the excuses. There, it was my breaking point, I felt like I lost, passion. Playing guitar doesn't make me happy anymore. It used to be my escape, when everything's wrong, the days when it's so gloomy inside. I used to find relief after playing, after singing. But at that time, I didn't, not anymore. And so I decided to leave.
It was until, 2 weeks ago, when I decided to change cher's guitars strings. They're rusty, and she just looked and sounded so awful I couldn't bear it. So with a help from the brilliant youtube (yeah I didn't know how to change acoustic guitar strings) and a reckless soul, I changed her strings. After I did, I test-drived the new strings (a.k.a. play to it), and danggggg she sounded ah-ma-zingggg!! Maybe it was the strings that made her sound so beautiful, or whatever, but that moved me. I then started playing over and over and over again. Learning new songs, learning progressions, tricks, lots of stuffs. Again with the youtube geniuses haha. So that is what keeps me busy lately.
Bottom line, now, finding your passion is truly important. Being able to play guitar again, it really made me happy. Oh, and especially when it's rainy, I just loved sitting at the corner of my room playing guitar and singing along. I'm not so sure if my housemates are upset with me playing guitar and singing already, but they haven't knocked on my door so I'll take that as a no :)) (P.S. housemates if you read this don't hesitate on telling me if I crossed your borderlines, cause it might get louder haha)
I know this is my passion, and though I'm not very good at it now, I'm progressing. It may be slow for now, and I may not be as good as others, but that made me happy. And I think that is what's most important. I took this quote from the internet:
"Ignoring your passion is slow suicide."
And truthfully, it is. Music has always been a part of me, singing and playing to it makes me feel alive. Nothing could ever replace that.
So what's your passion?
:))
